Every sculpture tells a story when they are by German Hansgerd Honnen, a passionate yachtsman from Portsmouth’s twin city of Duisburg. Trained as a graphic designer, his career spanned visual communications, exhibition stand design and architecture until five years ago he made the leap to a full time life as an artist.
His brilliantly perceptive, wittily titled and passionately executed ships often comment on heart felt sea-faring issues, such as the progressive axing of small coastal freighters, the courage of mariners every time they entrust their lives to the treacherous sea, or the continuous bloating of shipping that today gives us super-tankers in obscene sizes.
But there can be no doubting his commitment to ships, and those who crew them.
